1970 Nation account of American Historical Association convention. Academia is so boring these days. “Genovese ended his speech by screaming at the top of his lungs that the time had come to isolate the group, and to ‘put them down put them down hard, once and for all.’ The most conservative members of the association thereupon stood and cheered. One could hear such libertarian and scholarly cries as ‘kill the Panthers,’ ‘kill the Vietcong,’ and ‘kill Lynd and Wascow.’ Indeed, one member launched a physical attack on Arthur Wasccow.” Also mentions Jesse Lemischs standing ovation for his paper Present-Minded Revisited. Dont see those every day.
