1986. I was a bartender in Springfield, OH. 23. Had no future. None. I almost flunked out of high school. I was bartending at a bar in Springfield, OH. Bartending was a GREAT job for me. I had a friend who was going to OSU at the time, Brad, and he was sharing an apartment with some dude on campus, but they werent using the apartment over the summer. He agreed to sub-let it to me for a huge discount (just pay the actual rent), for two months. I agreed. Met Beth Bennett. She was the blonde at the end of the bar. I asked her if shed like to go out, on a date. She said YES! I was very charming. Very charming. I was stupid then, and stupid now, our first date was at Taco Bell(!), after I shut the bar down. We had several dates. And I had a dream. I was going to move to Columbus, OH and apply to go to THE Ohio State University as a Journalism student. [I did, and I was top of my class after 4 years. I won the Scarlet and Grey Scholarship without even applying for it [We found out with a piece of mail, and we were completely broke at the time, so it was amazing news!]. I was asked to give the valedictorian speech at my graduation ceremony. I turned it down because I couldnt figure out how to give an actual speech, with my intense shyness. True story.] I decided I was going to give everything else up and move to Columbus. No job, no prospects there (I figured I could get a bartending job, HOPEFULLY). Never mind the fact that I almost flunked out of high school. I asked Beth if shed like to come with me. She said yes. Didnt hesitate. Didnt hesitate. There is a reason why I love this song so much. Took a look down a westbound road, right away I made my choice Headed out to my big two-wheeler, I was tired of my own voice Took a bead on the northern plains and just rolled that power on Twelve hours out of Mackinaw City stopped in a bar to have a brew Met a girl and we had a few drinks and I told her what Id decided to do She looked out the window a long long moment then she looked into my eyes She didnt have to say a thing, I knew what she was thinkin Roll, roll me away, wont you roll me away tonight I too am lost, I feel double-crossed and Im sick of whats wrong and whats right We never even said a word, we just walked out and got on that bike And we rolled And we rolled clean out of sight We rolled across the high plains Deep into the mountains Felt so good to me Finally feelin free Somewhere along a high road The air began to turn cold She said she missed her home I headed on alone Stood alone on a mountain top, starin out at the Great Divide I could go east, I could go west, it was all up to me to decide Just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise And pretty soon My heart was singin Roll, roll me away, Im gonna roll me away tonight Gotta keep rollin, gotta keep ridin, keep searchin till I find whats right And as the sunset faded I spoke to the faintest first starlight And I said next time Next time Well get it right https://youtube/watch?v=TEBwq4A1wsU
