1987 GOLDEN HORSE AWARDS NOMINEE FOR BEST PICTURE --- 秋天的童話 QIU TIAN DE TONG HUA (AN AUTUMNS TALE), DIRECTED BY 張婉婷 MABEL CHEUNG (1950-), HONG KONG, 1987, 98. The film won for best leading actor (CHOW YUN-FAT 周潤發). “Welcome to Sampan. Table for two? Just a minute please.” The favourite romance of many a Hongkonger, not least Mr Chow himself, this Alex Law-scripted drama is essentially a story of two lonely souls: a Hong Kong student (Chung) who moves to New York for her fickle boyfriend (Chan), and her older but no less puerile cousin (Chow), who settles her down before cheering her up with such sophisticated fares as, eh, going to Broadway musicals. Predictable it may be, but An Autumn’s Tale is as irresistibly heartfelt a film as it comes.
