1994. I suppose I have to talk about Hallelujah. The original Leonard Cohen version appeared on his 1984 album Various Positions, and I was well familiar with the song since my parents played it frequently. But unless you were a Cohen fan, you probably didnt hear it. Eventually though, it would become a pop standard - with well over 300 cover versions recorded by artists ranging from k.d. lang to Bono to Alexandra Burke of The X Factor (which became the U.K. Christmas number one single in 2008). But looming above the others is Jeff Buckleys version, from his album Grace.
