#1Up Talk Session #1 CoolBeanz Take on Support Many of us local artist look for support and often get pissed when it’s lacking. Well, lets talk about it. Support is when a person other than yourself, Listens to, talks about, shares, purchase, & streams you music. Also a supporter will attends events, buy/wear your merchandise, will be familiar with you. Supporters and fans are two of the same. Depending on the kind of fan a person is…. It can be flattering and sometimes it can get weird (thats a mother story). Back to the subject of support. I’m going to give definitions all through this. Now lets talk about SATURATION. Many artist in the city is what I call BURN OUT ARTIST (aforementioned as BOA). Se a BOA is so hungry to be heard or seen that they will place themselves on every single they can get a hold of. This is necessary in the beginning of your career because its the only way to get heard. This is also grade school for an artist. Where you perfect you stage presence. This is where a lot of artist fall short. Many artist enter stage grade school with the mind frame of “I’m hot… I’m already ready”. They have bias friends and family attend the shows and regardless of performance level, will have a hype crowned for their set. Then comes the EGO CLOUD. The ego cloud keeps you from seeing that the rest of the club isn’t rocking with you. For some artist they actually do rock the crowd. Doesn’t omit them from being a BOA though. Usually it ends up being a lot of artist who stay in this stage because it’s a constant high from somewhat feeling praised for you talents. Before you know it, a couple years have passed, you’ve dropped a couple mixtapes, friends a family are tired of coming to see the same performance and the same songs because you have OVERSATURATED yourself in the music scene. Even if you have good stage presence…It still gets old to people and you BURN OUT. Lets talk about your FIRST REAL FANS. Your first real fans are artist. They are actually the best fans to have. People who have the same ambition as you are more susceptible to listen than those who don care and have a low attention span. Those open mic days are the beginning of your career. ARTIST ARE THE FIRST SET OF PEOPLE THAT WILL TELL ANOTHER PERSON ABOUT YOU IF THEY LIKE YOU. They are the first people to look up to you. They are the first people that can’t wait to hear you again. The problem is that youre a BOA with an EGO CLOUD. You hate performing in front of artist because the shows are usually wack and unentertaining. Imagine being in a room full of BOA’s thinking it’s all about them. Sounds like a place that a regular patron doesn’t want to be. That’s right those friends and families stop coming because they can think of better things to do than to sit in a room full of a bunch of egotistical soon to be has beens. Things better like sitting at home and doing nothing. Now we understand what Saturation, Burn out Artist, the ego cloud, and real fans are. We also learned how easy it is to go wrong. Now that we know the problem hears the solution. LEARNING: YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO PEOPLE IN ORDER TO WIN THEM OVER. ITS NOT ABOUT YOU. IT’S TOTALLY ABOUT THEM!!!! there are things that draw people to an artist and if you think its just because you can spit, youre wrong. Here’s some helpful steps to gaining fans / supporters in a live setting while your in you beginning stages. 1) Study: Treat open mic as school and learn form every artist that touches the stage. See what they do that makes the crowd react and the thing that makes the crowd leave the stage. 2) Demographics: If you rap like Lupe fiasco and mod def and you don’t plan on being diverse then stay in your lane. Be around the kind of people that love your kind of shit. The last thing you need is when your name comes up a group of people saying your wack. 3) Camaraderie: Every artist is your Comrade. Kick it with every one in the spot. Do collaborations. Don’t be afraid to compliment or give good advice, or receive criticism. Do not be judgmental enough to not associate with someone you consider is wack. that sack person could be YOUR BIGGEST FAN. 4) Comparison: Do not compare yourself to you peers. There’s no elevation in that. ALWAYS COMPARE YOURSELF TO SUPERSTARS. It’s a reason whey they are there. By doing this your persona and stage presence and everything that has to do with your artistry will elevate far beyond your peers. 5) Reverse support: Go to shows that your are NOT booked on. Go to support some of your fav local artist. Even some of your not so favorites. Let them know you came out to see them AND PURCHASE THEIR CD AND LISTEN TO IT. You’ll be surprised what that $5 will do for you later. Give support and you will get it. THIS BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS. 6) Elevation: At the peek of your career, climb. Do something big and special. Elevate and change. Maybe a show with a band. Spend more money on promotions. Throw a show and put other artist on the same level as you on it. After this show. DO NOT go back to doing shows every other day. Visit every so often and tell people your working on some next level shit. They will believe you because you’re consistent with surprising everyone with greatness. 7) Bigger things: People need to see you climbing or you can still be a BOA even after doing everything right. Shoot creative videos. Not the kind where you are standing in front of your niggas and rapping. “Treat finding opportunities like a Job” (quote from - MonicaBlaire) Don’t be afraid to sell tickets of pay to be on bigger events with a much higher caliber of artist. (ie RenCen CoolBeanz / Janelle Monae show). 8) Off the record: Your personality actually sells you more than your music does. So be very social EVERYDAY. Do not be a CYBER BOA. Because people get tired of you asking them to check you out and then never hearing from you again. Artist to fan relations are far more personal than it used to be. 9) Documentation: FILM THE REACTIONS PEOPLE HAVE TO WHAT YOU DO. People are more susceptible to follow when they see others following. So take the camera off of yourself (you conceited bastard) and show the most important people of all…THE SUPPORTERS. Being in the early stage of you career, you will gain super fans. Because you understand that people need to feel wanted or to feel that your sharing with them and not just looking for someone to be on your jock so you can juice them for money. Follow these steps, be over the tope great at what you do and you too can be a Monica Blaire LRenee Detroit Steffanie Christian Roland RoSpit Coit Marv ONeal Moe dirdee Quest Mcody Miz Korona or RenCen CoolBeanz. Or even better...the next YOU.
