$2.5M ROAD PROJECT TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW, SAFETY Gov. Eddie Calvo participates in groundbreaking ceremony of Route 25/26 This morning, Gov. Eddie Calvo thanked DPW, Federal Highways, and the people who’ve helped improve the infrastructure of the island. “We’ve received $50 million in Department of Defense funds for highways alone. So for those who are criticizing the military buildup, the money already is coming in and being used to improve the lives of all our people.” Calvo said the road project also will help improve safety and traffic flow. He added that like many other Guamanians who’ve called his office, he’s waited anxiously for Route 25 to be resurfaced. “It wasn’t too long ago when certain other roads were paved but they had to be redone. If you don’t do it the right way, then in five, six, seven years you’re back. And you have to fix problems that weren’t taken care of in the very beginning,” the governor stated. “There’s a lot of good things happening. But as we progress, we need to make sure that when we do something we do it right. That’s whats so important when Calvo-Tenorio came to office – that we do things the right way, consistently moving in the right direction.” Carl Dominguez, DPW Director, said the road project will cover an approximate 1,500 feet — 300 feet from the intersection going towards Marine Corps Drive and 1,200 feet going up the hill leading to Latte Heights. “It’s going to be a much safer road, as long as our people obey speed and other traffic limits,” Dominguez said. “Eight months from now, we’ll activate the streetlights and we’ll have a ribbon cutting ceremony to conclude the project.” Dominguez said he’s working to get spot repairs on the lower half of the hill not covered by the federally funded $2.5 million project. Project information • $2.5 million project • Contractor: Korando Corp. • Designer: Parsons Brinkerhof • Construction Management: AECOM • Project consists of overlaying and widening Route 26, which will then include turning lanes, bike lanes, paved shoulders, new friction course, a new retention basin, a retaining wall and guardrails on northbound Route 26, signage and striping, improved drainage conveyance and utility relocation. The traffic signal will be reconfigured and an advance flashing beacon will be added.
