#2 ACT ONE, SCENE FIVE 11:00 P.M. A back alley. A suggestion of buildings; a fire escape climbing to the rear window of an unseen flat. As Tony sings, he looks for where Maria lives, wishing for her. And she does appear, at the window above him, which opens onto the fire escape. Music stays beneath most of the scene. TONY: (mouths the words through the window) Maria! Maria! MARIA: Tony, shh! You sound like a wolf howling at night! TONY: Maria! Open the window! Let me in! MARIA: (to self) And such a noisy wolf! (opens the window) No! You have to go, my papa-- TONY: (steps inside the room, looks around; He gives a lopsided smile to Maria.) He will surely like me. MARIA: (smiles) He will surely be happy to see your head on a silver platter. TONY: If being on a silver platter will make me see you every day, then let it be! MARIA: (smiles) Oh Tony. Bernardo. You do not know him. He is strict with me. And not just him, my father, mother, all of them. TONY: I didn’t come here for Bernardo. I came here for you. (cups her face with his hands) (MAN’S VOICE): Maria! MARIA: Un momento, Papa! (to Tony) Tony, go. Would it hurt to just wait? I told you we’ll see each other soon. This is dangerous. TONY: To not see your face is more dangerous to my heart. (Maria smiles) TONY: (comes closer and holds Maria hands) Seeing you makes me feel like I’m on top of the world. MARIA: (sits on the bed) Take care. You might slip while being on top. (worries) You should go. TONY: I don’t care if I slip. It would mean I would fall onto the Earth, the world. And my world is you. MARIA: And mine, you. TONY: Our time together at the dance was quite short, wasn’t it? MARIA: Very. TONY: (takes out his hand) May I have this dance? MARIA: Tony, there is no music. TONY: You are all the song I need. MARIA: (gives her hand and they start dancing) The first time I set my eyes on you I knew we were meant to be. TONY: The first time I set my eyes on you, I knew you were what I was waiting for to happen. MARIA: Somewhere in the sky Our love is written in the stars. TONY: Somewhere in the sky, Those stars will never break apart. MARIA: I will be here, with all the hope in the world To love you is all I can do for now Until the time that our love will come through. (MAN’S VOICE INTERRUPTS): Maruca! MARIA: (they’ve stopped dancing) Momentito! TONY: Maruca? MARIA: Yes, his pet name for me. TONY: (smiles) Maruca. I like it. MARIA: It’s getting dark, Tony. Go home. We’ll see each other soon. TONY: I cannot find my way home. You’re my flame in the dark. MARIA: (leads Tony out the room, onto the fire escape) Tony, this is a mistake. I am disobeying my family just talking here with you. TONY: Then it would be the best mistake I would have ever made. MARIA: Tony. TONY: Yes. That is my name. (smiles, kisses Maria’s hand) What is good night in your language? MARIA: Buenos noches. TONY: Buenos noches, Maria. MARIA: When will I see you again, Tony? TONY: Tomorrow. MARIA: I work at Anita’s bridal shop. Come there after closing time. TONY: I will. Te adoro Maria. MARIA: Te adoro, Tony. TONY: (climbs down) Anton. MARIA: Anton? TONY: Tony came from Anton. MARIA (smiles): Te adoro, Anton. (She goes inside; He ducks out into the shadows) END OF ACT ONE, SCENE FIVE.
