#2) Capture everyday life moments. I would give gold to have videos of Nathan and I hunting on a pheasant hunt or of us canoeing down Salt Creek. Those were ordinary life moments for us that are now priceless. I never fully captured. I fully experienced them but I never captured them. Now, I wish I would have. Life is precious. It is quickly fleeting. We can’t grab it and hold it. Or can we? I believe pictures and videos are the closest we can get to grabbing life. It’s tempting, too, to say that just living is enough, that this surge in capturing on your iphone is a distraction. But I’ve seen even ordinary moments transform for the better. I’ve got pictures and videos of my kids with their chickens in ordinary moments playing with them. Now that the kids are older and the chickens are full grown those pictures have captured a special moment that is forever gone. Those pictures are now my absolute favorite photos for that season of life. Two young kids hatching eggs. Cute fluffy chicks stumbling around the kitchen floor. The kids looking at chicks with absolute delight in eye. Everyone playing in the yard with huge, sunny smiles on our faces. A deeper joy magnified. That’s what I’ll never forget. Never forget! For the first time in the history of the world we have incredibly easy ways to never forget the great times of our lives, the ordinary every day moments. I don’t want to be distracted from being in the moment, but I also don’t want to lose memory of the good times we experience today. Life is good. Pick up that camera and capture this moment and then put it on your computer and organize it well. After all that is done, begin to back up your photos and videos on an external hard drive. Do it for posterity. Do it for the ones you love. Do it for your future joy. Do it, because it is so easy to do it. Do it but enjoy what you see through the lens. Everyday moments happen that will be completely forgotten unless they are captured. True art is learning to capture the moment while still enjoying the fullness of the moment. ― Jordan Schmidt “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” ― Karl Lagerfeld “Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.” ― L.M. Montgomery. “Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.” ― Marc Riboud. The short-term rewards of quick status updates unlock the long-term rewards of a collection of moments to look back on and love. ― Mónica Guzmán
