2 Corinthians 8:10—“And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started to do this work, but also to desire to do it.” The Greek word translated “desire” here means, “to will, to wish, to intend, to purpose.” This verse doesn’t give any of the background, but if you will go back and read the first nine verses of the chapter, you will see that Paul is thanking the whole group of Macedonian churches, of which Corinth is one, for reaching deep and giving to support the saints in other places going through hard times. All the churches of Macedonia (known today as Greece) were poor. Roman occupation raped and pillaged its way across this culturally and artistically rich nation, leaving the whole country in poverty and reeling emotionally from being under the boot of oppressors. Enter the God News of Jesus Christ.
