2 Millions Bikers to DC Got this and had to share I thought you might some background (historical) info on "Join or Die": The Algonquins called them Irinakhoiw, which means ‘rattlesnake’ (the French version of that word is Iroquois). They called their own Nation, Haudenosaunee (people of the long house); they are the oldest republic in America; they gave the US founding fathers the idea for a republic; they were at the Constitutional Convention and had many meetings with the founding fathers prior to the Revolutionary War. I find the 1744 Convention that Chief Canassatego attended with Ben Franklin fascinating. Chief Canassatego gave Franklin an arrow as a gift, then snatched it away and broke it over his knee. He then gave Franklin 13 arrows, then snatched them away and tried to break them over his knee. He couldn’t. He told Franklin there is ‘strength in unity’, which was the exact same form of government (and principle) that the Haudenosaunee had, ‘strength in unity’ - 5 tribes became one Nation (republic), but yet each of those tribes was individually sovereign, that sounds familiar :-) Now, if we look at Franklin’s “join or die” 1754 newspaper article, that sounds like ‘strength in unity’. But, that motto is depicted in the article with a ‘rattlesnake’, (an Irinakhoiw), cut into 8 pieces. Also, If we look at the great seal of the US; the bald eagle grasps an olive branch in its left talons and a bundle of thirteen arrows in its right. Common belief is that the “olive branch and arrows are symbols for the power of peace and war”; but the colonists didn’t use arrows in war, so wouldn’t/shouldn’t it be a musket? OR does it actually depict the 13 arrows given as a gift to Franklin? My bet is on the gift. Even the bald eagle ... the Haudenosaunee had a ‘tree of peace’; in Washington DC there is a ‘tree of liberty’. On top of the Haudenosaunee ‘tree of peace’ a bald eagle landed (this is depicted in their drawings). Ben Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey originally, he changed his mind to a bald eagle. I could go on and on: Covenant chain, and combing the king’s hair are more examples of Haudenosaunee (major) influence on what was established in a US republic.
