2 Samuel 21:15-17 Our David Never Waxes Faint Please read Matthew 1:1 in addition to todays text, for there Jesus Christ is declared to be the Son of David. The similarities between His life and that of David are marvelous. David was of Bethlehem (1 Sam.17:12; Lk.2:4); Christ was attached to Bethlehem through His birth (Mic.5:2; Lk.2:11). David was rejected by his people (ch.15), as was Jesus Christ (Jn.1:11). God commanded Samuel to anoint David king (1 Sam.16:12-13); Jesus Christ is King of kings (1 Tim.6:15) and will sit on the throne of His father, David (Lk.1:32). Our David, too, endured the lies of many and eventually died on a Roman cross. But death could not hold its prey; He conquered death (1 Cor.15:20) and rose triumphant (1 Cor.15:4-8). And, unlike David of old, He, today, is even yet a great warrior. Our David never waxes faint! The giants cannot overcome Him, for they are entirely powerless against Him. A wonderful account is recorded in Joshua 5:13-15. Prior to engaging the battle against Jericho, Joshua was confronted by a Soldier brandishing His sword-it was the Commander of the army of the Lord. Joshuas instinctive, soldierly challenge was, in essence, Who goes there: friend or foe? He quickly learned that this was the Captain of the host of the Lord (surely an appearance of Jesus Christ Himself, Josh.5:14), and Joshua fell down to worship Him. The lesson is clear; Joshua was merely second in command; our David was in charge. He is the divine Commander of both the army of Israel and of the angelic host, the army of heaven (2 Kgs.6:8-17). Lifes battles are many, but praise God, our David never waxes faint (1 Cor.15:57). JED
