2 Timothy 1:6-7, NET: Because of this I remind you to rekindle God’s gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. As I thought about these verses, I found it deeply ironic that so often we--at least I--allow the positive promises of God to generate fear in us. Far too often when I consider the blessings God has promised to me and compare it to my failures and need for growth, I experience fear and discouragement. Paul here obliquely highlights the absurdity of that response. The process of receiving the blessings of God are in two ways anti-ethical to us being fearful: 1. The blessings themselves include gifts that eliminate fear 2. The explicit command that we should not have the spirit of fear I like Pauls solution to the problem of fear: just dive in, rekindle the gift, use it. Dont let yourself fear, just exercise the gift.
