#2 there seems to be a large gas between the real self and the ideal self. Plural Participation of the Self when an individual participants in two or more divergent cultural groups there arises a cultural hybrid or marginal man. The act of participantion may be viewed from the standpoint of three psychologist concepts: social distance, identification and assimilation. 1. Social distance. It measures the degrees of intimacy or remoteness, of acceptance or rejection, in social relations. In the case of cultural hybrid, there is a high degree of social distance. On the whole, the greater the marginality of an individual, the greater is the social distance separating him from his group. 2. Identification. In this process, the individual takes over the ideas, beliefs, and habits of the members of a group and makes them his own. For the cultural hybrid, this involves the partial acceptance of the culture of the group of which he is a new member. Identification involves some degree of understanding sympathy for and cooperation with the new group. The fullest participation is found when the individual experiences a maximum group identification with a minimum of social distance. 3. Assimilation. This is the final stage in the imperceptible transmission from cultural hybridity to cultural fusion. The cultural hybrid, once a divided self, is now an integrated individual.
