2 years ago at Xmas, I was in McDonalds in London and a homeless lady walked in and was 25p short on her cheeseburger. She cried her eyes out. The usual suspects stood there and laughed and stared and whispered, turned their noses up. I gave her a £5 and told her to buy a whole meal. The look of horror on peoples faces around me were a picture but she really struck a chord with me. Probably because she was female but mainly because that 25p meant her going without another meal. I swore Id go back at Xmas and go and help out the homeless in some way, even by buying them a cup of tea. Last night, even though weve not exactly been the best of friends recently, David picked me up and we were going to do something we swore wed only do together. Unbeknown to me, in the back of the car, hed bought hats, gloves, socks, bit of chocolate, a lighter, and a Xmas card with £1.50 in it. We pulled up at our first, a lady, Imogen. My chest tightened knowing she was homeless but the fact it was a woman and it could happen to me. We heard her story and I cried inside. Shed been homeless since she was 13, Leahs age. Her story will stay with me forever. We visited a few more people and only found 1 other lady. Most were men, most were foreign but they all had their own stories too. I came away firstly feeling very sick at the amount Id spent this Xmas, secondly because that couldve easily been me if I continued to take the wrong path. I was freezing, even with all my layers on and most of them didnt have socks on. Imogen gave me the number to her Outreach worker and Im going to make that call. Just wish I couldve done more..
