20 years since the Estonia ferry disaster this night. I remember the morning of 28th September 1994 very well. We were living in Kaarina and our home was situated rather exactly on the line between the sinking place and Turku University Hospital. We were at home that morning, all family had the flu. I woke up because of the constant noise of choppers flying over the house and at about 8 am got out of bed, went to the living room and turned on the TV. Watched the news on text-tv, saying Ferry catastrophe. 800 lives lost My first sleepy thought was, that this is something that has happened in Indonesia or thereabouts. But then the message came through. A friend of mine lost his mother and aunt in the disaster. And there were other losses for people I knew. Estonia is so small, that I guess almost everyone knew someone who died or whose relatives or friends died. RIP.
