200 years ago today, at dawn, Francis Scott Key watched from the deck of the HMS Tonnant as Ft. McHenry, the sole fort guarding the entrance to Baltimore Harbor, entered the 27th hour of enduring an endless barrage from the British Fleet. As the British cannons began to finally silence, he strained his eyes to see through the cloud of smoke and fire until finally a rocket launched from a nearby British vessel, illuminated the fort. Before his eyes he saw blowing in the wind a massive American flag, which was traditionally raised every morning at reveille. So inspired by the sight of the flag flying above the smoking fort, Key would write a poem the following day he entitled, The Defence of Fort MHenry. This poem, set to the tune of a British drinking song, would eventually take on a new name; The Star Spangled Banner.
