2009 Trinity graduate, Katie Carpenter attended college at Saint Louis University. She graduated from SLU in 2013 with three majors in Political Science, International Studies, and Russian, along with two minors in History and Eastern European Area Studies. After graduation she moved to Washington, DC and started a Masters degree program at the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University. She is majoring in European and Eurasian Studies and concentrating on international organizations, diplomacy and globalization. She will graduate this spring. Being an international affairs professional, traveling has been a big part of Katies life since high school. She studied five different languages in college - Russian, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Czech - and studied abroad in Rome. Katie primarily focused on Russia and Eastern Europe during school, and has gotten the chance to travel to Russia twice. She said the most life-changing experience she had was working at a summer camp in Western Siberia. There, she was given the opportunity to teach English and American culture to Russian children ages 5-17, in a city called Tyumen. She had only one other native English speaker with her, which enabled her to learn more about intercultural communication and global citizenship. Her second trip to Russia was another amazing opportunity she could not pass up. This past February she was able to travel back to Russia to be a volunteer for Team USA at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi! Last year she was a semifinalist for a Fulbright scholarship to Russia. She has reapplied this year and is currently awaiting a response. She also continues to look for work in international affairs and a chance to get her various research projects published. Congrats Katie! And good luck on all your future endeavors! – from your Trinity family
