2012 after many years of neglect and graffiti we decided to do something about the sad state of affairs so we repainted the black with donated paint from alpha paints ie good quality outdoor laquer... over the 20 or so layer of exosting paint removing a little as possible to preserve it,s history.. ( including the many colours.) we went back in 2013 and removed all the loose flaking paint from the limestone by hand and with care and respect .. ie it was a white limestone horse. we ran out of white paint and had to source some more and B&Q gave us some .. we then went back and painted some of the white.. sadly it rained. but we had set a marker and suffice to say it was never vandalised .. so it was left with a nice black coat and a half done white painted coat ... which is fine the horse still looked white even if it was half limestone and half paint ... we were due to go up this summer and give it it,s yearly maintenCe but needed a few good days of dry weather.. still looking good ..esp from the pier as it should ....then someone comes along and takes the black layer off leaveing a huge square in front of the horses leg for months ... which really puzzled me. so we left it waiting for the weather to be fine enough .. after many many years of neglect going back to the 80s at least the horse has never been looked after till we started .. a quick trawl though the photos show that it was never maintained after redwell school stopped doing it .. it wasn,t half finished at all.. we had completed a lot of the work and sypathetically as well ..now the council has jumped in and cleaned it all off and replacing it ...are they going to paint the black as well ...are they going to maintain it every year... it was a community organise thing now its the councils. are they going to repaint/ maintain it every year or when it gets another head or addition/ graffetii or when it gets some red stripes ..
