2013/14 Intramural Athletic Training New Year’s Newsletter Well everyone, it’s been an exciting year at the rec. complex and Lafene. First of all, the rec. complex construction is now complete! Yes, you read correctly…complete. After close to four long years of construction, the entire renovated rec. complex is now open! The place looks wonderful and is very ample with space. From our perspective, we are very excited that we now have 2 doors again in the training room. I know there are several of you that have never seen the second door. Well, it’s back and we’re very excited. Things continue to be busy at the rec. complex. Steve is still the director of the building and had a knee replacement last spring after all those years of playing volleyball. John still works in the office as well but does very little with intramurals. Armando runs the intramurals and I believe is now in his fifth year with us. He constantly peppered us this fall with all the Mac Brown and Texas news. Silly rabbit! Lafene has also been very busy. I am now in my 12th year back at Lafene. Kylie, our physical therapist is in her third year and got married to Meg last fall. She will likely be leaving this summer as an upcoming transfer for Meg is scheduled. To that news, we hired another PT who will start this coming July. His name is Brandon Ness and he comes from Minnesota. After he starts we plan on hiring a second PT for the department as well. K-State has recently bought the Lafene building from Mercy. Sadly I think the large green space in front of the building will probably get eaten up by something, likely a parking lot for the new dorm being built across the street. The city of Manhattan is growing like crazy! If you haven’t been in town for a few years, you will be very surprised when you come to visit. The National Bio-Agricultural Defense facility (NBAF) is being built off Denison Street across from the rec. fields at a cost of $1.1 Billion. Manhattan now has a super wal mart, a Target, a Best Buy, a Menards, the mall of course, a Home Depot, and 5 grocery stores just to name a few things. The football stadium expansion is amazing! There is a parking ramp on campus. They are beginning building expansions for the student union and engineering buildings. They are building a new business building. They are building a large luxury hotel right across the street from Aggieville. This town is growing people! Now on to the current and former staff! The Current Staff Jeff Kreuser M.S., LAT, CSCS – Athletic Trainer/Director of Rehabilitation Services – Lafene Health Center – Manhattan, KS - I am halfway through my 12th year back working at K-State. (Time flies when youre having fun) I recently received a promotion and am now the Director of Rehabilitation Services here at Lafene Health Center. I have been performing a lot more physician extender type duties which helps open up appointment slots for our medical providers. I also get to perform all of the administrative duties for the department. I continue to host Trivia Smackdown each Wednesday night down at Auntie Maes and am looking forward to our 10th Anniversary at the end of this month. Gretchen (the dog) and I still live in our house down on Vattier Street as well. Brett Gliem LAT – Brett is a resident of Iowa and an alum of Buena Vista University. BV has been a very good pipeline for us here at K-State. Brett is in his second year with us and will be finishing up this May with a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. He is looking for jobs around Kansas and is hoping to apply to PA school next year. Brett and his girlfriend Heather met while working at the rec. last year. She was a Building Supervisor and he spent many an evening (while working) meandering his way over to the desk to woo her with his charms. Seriously though, she’s a great girl. You’ve done good Brett! Jalisa Phillips LAT – Jalisa is a product of Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa. She is in her first year with us and is pursuing her Master’s Degree in Kinesiology as well. Both she and Brett have this Iowa Hawkeyes love thing going which I constantly have to set them straight on. In true rec. athletic trainer tradition, Jalisa lent her skills to a supes co-rec volleyball team this fall. I think she will be recruited for softball as well. Ryan Lahey – Student Athletic Trainer – Ryan joins us this year as a student trainer. He is very familiar with the rec. complex as he also works as a climbing wall supervisor. I think we may need to schedule a work retreat to climb the wall with Ryan’s help of course. Eric Bustillos – Student Athletic Trainer – Eric is a senior from Sublette KS and in true Southwest Kansas tradition is not only a K-State fan but also an Ohio State fan. Wait, how does that work Eric? Eric has been accepted into the PTA program this coming fall at Washburn. Congrats Eric! Former Directors Jeff Rudy PhD, LAT – Director (1992-1993) – Current position: Director of Athletic Training Education – University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE) – Jeff continues to mold and create great athletic training minds up in the Great Red North. Mike Frey M.Ed., LAT (2000-2002) – Current position: Athletic Trainer/Substitute teacher at Lees Summit North High School (Lees Summit, MO) – Mike decided to finish his teaching degree and now works out at Lees Summit High School. Kaden is 14 and Kalee is 10 now which blows my mind as well. I am a little jealous of Kasee as she got to go see Pearl Jam in Washington earlier this fall. I bet it was pretty cool!
