2013 Immigration Reform Update: A bipartisan group of senators - TopicsExpress

2013 Immigration Reform Update: A bipartisan group of senators have made their own bipartisan immigration reform bill for compromise in the House of Representatives. This bill shows the increasing political significance of the Hispanic population in the US. Senator Menendez, one of the Gang of Eight claimed that “Without [legalization], there is no path to the White House for the Republican Party.” A CBO Report claims that the immigration bill would shrink the deficit and boost the economy, with the federal deficit being supposedly cut by 200 billion dollars over the next 10 years. However, an immigration reform bill was already passed in 1986 called the “Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.” It called for more border security, employer restrictions, and amnesty. Unfortunately, Congress didn’t fund the Border Patrol well enough, so illegal border crossings increased. Illegal immigration skyrocketed, and employers chose to ignore sanctions on hiring illegal immigrants. As a result, the bill only increased the number of illegal immigrants in the country. Although the new bill increases spending for the border and also deals with VISA’s, Americans have to wonder if their government is actually capable of keeping this bill from repeating the failure of 1986.
