2013 SIU SDM White Coat Ceremony On October 5, 2013, the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine hosted its annual White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2017. Fifty new dental students were joined by hundreds of family and friends, as well as many SIU SDM faculty members, to celebrate the distinguished occasion. Each year, the White Coat Ceremony underscores the unique ethical responsibilities of health care professionals espoused through the Professional Oath. The ceremony also serves to formally welcome the entering class into the profession of dentistry. Dr. J. Barry Howell, Immediate Past President of the Illinois State Dental Society, served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony. During his tenure as the President of the ISDS, Dr. Howell served as an Ex-Officio member of the ISDS Foundation Board. Dr. Howell is also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, DENT-IL-PAC and ADPAC, and is currently serving on the American Dental Association’s Council of Governmental Affairs. Following Dr. Howell’s remarks, Dr. Cornell Thomas, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Services at the School of Dental Medicine, called the new dental students individually to the stage. Following tradition, two alumni and faculty members of the SIU School of Dental Medicine—Drs. Susan Rieken (Class of 1995) and Kathy Weber (Class of 1995)—helped the students don their white coats. Once each student was fitted with their respective white coat, they proceeded to sign the Professional Oath. With all the members of the Class of 2017 assembled on the stage, Dr. Bruce Rotter, Dean of the SIU School of Dental Medicine, led them in the recitation of the Professional Oath. Erin Syzdek, a Year III dental student and President of the Student Body, offered closing remarks. Following the ceremony, family and friends in attendance were invited to the SIU School of Dental Medicine, Alton Campus, for lunch and campus tours. The Illinois State Dental Society Foundation, the Central Illinois Academy of General Dentistry, the Eighth District of the International College of Dentists, and the Illinois Section of the American College of Dentists served as sponsors for the event. The SIU School of Dental Medicine is sincerely grateful for the generosity exhibited by each of the sponsors.
