2013 Summer Season Recap The end of our summer camp season is upon us and soon our children will be heading back to school. I thought I would take this opportunity to share some of the great experiences of this summer and thank the parents, scout leaders, friends and members for their hard work and participation. We kicked off the summer Season with a late St. George Day Celebration in the Santa Monica Mountains. We hiked, played games, marched, ate and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon and evening. We were even lucky enough to watch a polo match! This was followed a few weeks later with our volchata/belochki lager in Deadmans Creek, between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake. This week long event saw a little of everything from rain to heat. We hiked in 2 iconic locations Devils Postpile and Yosemite. For many of our young campers these were their very first hikes but they all did great. The views, terrain and natural wonders that we saw were breathtaking. The kids built their own camp and we even raised a flagpole at which we raised and lowered flags daily. Those of you reading this that have been to camp know very well how magically quick our young campers can become filthy. To combat this we spent numerous days swimming in beautiful Alpine-like June Lake. These excursions were a big hit for everybody. Camp concluded with our traditional campfire Saturday night and all were returned safe and sound to their parents on Sunday. Two weeks later we headed off to Laytonville with a van full of campers and a trailer full of stuff. We were well represented with volchata, belochki, razvedcheekee, razvedcheetzi, druzhineetzi and rookovodeeteli at the 2 week event. There were multiple competitions, excursions, games and special events. There was a 3 day hike held in Redwood Country close to the Oregon border. Our boys zveno “Cherni Sokol” came in first place in the camp competition and our very own Misha Levitsky was honored as “Best Camper”. None of these events would be possible without the support of our parents, friends and children. I would also like to thank my staff who spent endless hours and volunteer their time selflessly to plan and carry out all of these events. One of the brightest parts of this summer was also watching our younger leaders step up, work and take on positions of authority. That is the natural progression of this organization. We really are making leaders and it shows! Lastly, on September 14th we will be holding our annual vistovka at the Scouts House. Although this is still a ways off, please mark it in your calenders. Come by and see the pictures, listen to the stories, enjoy some food and drink. All are welcome!!!!! Bring a friend AND their kids. Event will start in the afternoon, right after Russian School.
