2013 Westpac awards for women opens Nominations for the 2013 Westpac Outstanding Women Awards is open till August for women to submit nominations for chance to gain recognition, develop careers and win a host of prizes. The awards, previously known as the Westpac Women in Business Awards and now in their seventh year, recognise and reward women who have made outstanding achievements contributing to the development of Papua New Guinea. “Making an outstanding contribution might be supporting one’s local community, doing well in the private or public sector, being an entrepreneur or being a young high achiever,” said Mr Ashleigh Matheson, Managing Director, Westpac PNG. “It’s about doing something, whether big or small, that helps develop our great country.” There are five Award categories, comprising the Steamships Public Sector Award, the PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Sector Award, the SP Brewery Entrepreneur Award, the Trukai Community Award and the IBBM Young Achiever’s Award. Winners from these categories automatically qualify as nominees for the coveted overall title of Westpac Outstanding Woman of the Year. Mary Pohei won the Community Award in 2012 for her work with helping women to see their potential and encourage them to be successful in life. She spoke of the awards:“I am thankful to Westpac for creating such an award that recognises women...I believe in two things for PNG: one is literacy and my second belief is that all Papua New Guineans should be financially literate.” Meanwhile, Susil Nelson, who won the overall award last year for her outstanding work as Manager, Corporate Governance, PNG Sustainable Development, has spoken of what motivated her to achieve outstanding things.“I believe in personal integrity, I believe we all have to be the best at what we’re doing, including when we have to be of service to others,” she said. Prizes for each category Award winner includes a plaque, a K1000 Brian Bell gift voucher, a K500 Super Value Stores gift voucher and K5000 education grant. Meanwhile, the overall winner receives a trophy and a trip to attend an Australian Executive Women’s Leadership Symposium in Australia next year. In addition, Westpac is introducing a 12 month mentoring opportunity to each category award winner in 2013, with an award sponsor organisation or another relevant organisation of the winner’s choice. “Our new mentoring program will provide a valuable opportunity for the award winner to gain skills, knowledge and insight from those already working in their chosen field, plus added guidance on career or life goals,” said Mr Matheson. According to Mr Matheson, the Awards are a symbol of Westpac’s commitment to empowering women throughout PNG. “It’s truly remarkable to see so many women achieving exceptional things in this country on a daily basis. In big or small ways, women roll up their sleeves to pitch in to support PNG communities, to support the growth of businesses or to lead in entrepreneurialism,” said Mr Matheson. “What’s perhaps even more incredible is that these amazing women often go unacknowledged. We want to change that!” As an incentive, those who nominate a woman they know who has made an outstanding achievement will go in the draw to win one of three K1000 Westpac MasterCard Gift Cards. Nomination forms are available from all Westpac branches and on Westpac’s website. All winners will be announced at the Westpac Outstanding Women Awards dinner presentation in Port Moresby on Wednesday 16 October 2013.
