2014 GRANT APPLICATION Dear Friends and Colleagues: It’s that time of year – submissions for our upcoming grant cycle are now open. We look forward to seeing what you’ve got! Thanks once again to the generous support of the Foundation to Promote Open Society, we will be offering one $20,000 grant in 2014, and naming four finalists. The deadline for applications to be submitted is November 11, 2013. For the first time – at last! – the submission process will be online, via our recently re-launched website (which I mentioned was in the works in my letter to you last year). PLEASE be patient with us – there may be some kinks to work out. But we’ll get there, and we’ll make sure your application is accepted if you file (or try to file) by the deadline. We will announce the grant winner sometime in mid-December. As always, you’ll be the first to know before we issue a general press release. I want to clarify something again this year, since it’s come up a few times lately. We are a tiny organization committed to a very specific issue – post-conflict storytelling and education around those issues. There’s a purpose to our grant; we want to foster broad conversations through the work we support. That’s part of why we publish an annual book, featuring the work of our grant winner and finalists. It’s expensive. We don’t have tons of money – I started The Aftermath Project without a penny. And while we have built some wonderful partnerships and strong support, we still operate – and accomplish a lot – on a very modest budget. So – that’s why we ask each year’s grant winner and finalist to donate two prints to us, to use in raising the funds to pay for the book, which we also distribute pro bono to an important list of policy makers, educators and curators. If that seems unreasonable to you, then we’re probably not the right grant program for you. If you are working on a project that you don’t want shown or that you have committed to another publisher, once again, we’re not the right fit. At The Aftermath Project, we’re about fostering conversations and new ideas, and supporting your work once you become a member of the Aftermath “family.” One important note: please be sure to visit the “Join the Conversation” page on our website. We’ve created a digital online book where we welcome submissions of individual photos, poems, art work, etc. This is an open dialogue and we hope you’ll want to join it.
