2014 Prius c performs well on Americas worst commute... That being the I-405 and I-5 between the Shell just outside LAX and the Shell here on Leucadia and I-5 in northern San Diego. Traffic was actually a little lighter than most of my afternoon rush hours on this drive route in the past... Trip A/B indicated 96.9 miles vs. actual of 97.6 miles. Damn vapor recovery pump allowed about 2-oz to flow out of the rubber seal as it allowed an overfill before clicking off. :( :( :( Topped off in the std. format afterwards anyway. 97.6 miles on 1.11 gallons = 87.92 mpg vs the 88.2 mpg displayed. If I accounted for the 2-oz overflow, the actual would have been 89.2 vs the 88.2 mpg displayed by the aFCD. In any case, like the short lead with the 2012, Toyota engineers told the marketing folks to get out of the way as accuracy is more important than feel good as the Prius v, liftback, and PHEV teams installs. Meaning those vehicles aFCDs are over reporting by significant margins even today whereas the c is real close to actually under reporting. That is s very good thing. In any case, the small pack in the c harms it in the mountains and long distance stop and crawl vs its big brothers and sisters while its lightweight and more fuel efficient downsized 1.5L makes it far more efficient then the rest. Notice the compare drive screen vs a std. 50 mpg car by comparison. I did not expect much from that but driving a Prius c smartly this afternoon vs dumb saved me $3.43. Imagine the daily savings vs. most on this nasty drive route that are receiving 20 mpg or less!!! And the monthly screen shots give an indication of Journalists, Press Fleet drivers, and Toyota people driving this c. Appears to be mid to high 40s. Even my drive came in at 75+ after having to make up for the 15-miles that a press fleet handler placed on the little c this morning. :( I thought the short bottom seat cushions would be uncomfortable but so far they are OK. Will have more on that later in the week. Low rent appointments notwithstanding, it would be impossible for anything to touch one of these this side of a Passat TDI at maximum effort in heavy traffic. :) Pics below show some of the std. 405 traffic and possibly displays in the darker sections if you download them onto your PC. In the thick of it, she was well over 100 mpg for the first 35 miles and that is saying something pretty spectacular to me.
