2014 San Juan Islands Agricultural Summit March 7-8 Hands-On Friday, on March 7, will include three longer workshops from 1:30-5 p.m., covering biochar production, farm-to-school programs, and farmstead butchering. Summit Saturday, on March 8, includes more than 20 break-out sessions, led by experts from Organic Seed Alliance, WSU Small Farms Team, NW Agriculture Business Center, NW Agriculture Research Station, and local leaders. Subjects include soil fertility, use of biochar, seed production, emerging markets, and more. The day includes a local lunch prepared by chef Christina Orchid, as well as a panel discussion with local San Juan County elected officials. A seed swap and trade show take place throughout the day. Information about seed libraries will be available and various local organization will offer displays and tables. The Summit will take place at the Orcas Island High School, 715 School Rd., in Eastsound. Tickets for the event are $60 all day Saturday, $35 interns, students; $15 off registration for volunteers, free under 18 years old. Discounts available for members of Island Grown in the San Juans and Orcas Island Co-op. Some partial and full scholarships available. Hands on Friday workshops require separate registration.
