2014 YEAR-END ESSAY THERE ARE NO “GOOD FENCES” Friday 19 Dec 2014 Posted by ALTZAR in Global News - Stewards of the Earth NOBODY OWNS THE LAND: WE ARE ALL ONLY TEMPORARY CARETAKERS, STEWARDS OF THE EARTH Some people use the quote “good fences make good neighbors” to amplify their ownership of the land (a line from the poem “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost, 1874-1963). The implication? Fences are good because they make the boundaries clear. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I am here to tell you that there are no good fences. Only good or bad neighbors. Because all fences incite conflicts or wars. If not between the current neighbors, then between some future ones. That’s also what poor Frost was trying to say in his poem. Alas, the “good fences” quote is being taken completely out of context. In the poem, Frost was actually opposed to the fence his neighbor wanted to build. It was his neighbor who asserts “good fences make good neighbors” in the poem. Much to Frosts’ chagrin. Here’s the opening line of the “Mending Wall“: Something there is that doesn’t love a wall. (Robert Frost) “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.” Indeed. She is called Mother Earth.
