Abstract: Peter Schulthess, Aureliano Crameri, Margit-Koemeda-Lutz, Agnes von Wyl, Volker Tschuschke Switzerland, Germany Therapy Outcomes in a Naturalistic Outpatient Study throughout Switzerland In a naturalistic outpatient psychotherapy study throughout Switzerland 241 therapies from 10 different theoretical orientations were studied intensively with regard to process-outcome relationships in several regards (PAP-S). This paper presents data with special regards to the question of maintenance of treatment gains of patients with a broad variety of psychological problems and diagnoses. Complete outcome data on pre-follow-up or post-follow-up comparisons are available for 146 cases (60.6%). The whole sample improves highly significantly in all four outcome measures of the study (Brief Symptom Inventory, Outcome Questionnaire 45-2, Global Assessment Functioning Scale, Beck Depression Inventory-II) between post- and follow-up measurements one year after having finished treatment. For a major subgroup of the 146 cases (N = 76; 52.1%) treatment gains were stable or even improved after having finished treatment. Another subgroup had mixed results (in two of the four outcome measures significant improvement and deterioration in the remaining two measures) (N = 40; 27.4%), while N = 28 (19.2%) cases deteriorated in all four outcome measures between post and follow-up measurements. Treatment gains in psychotherapy should be differentiated. Most patients benefit from the treatment and some do not. This paper addresses the reasons for treatment failure by looking at relevant variables such as diagnosis and disease chronification, as well as treatment duration.
