2015 POLITICAL DRAMAS! #FG Board Appointment Splits PDM Members# The desire to be considered for appointment into boards of FG parastatals in the ongoing reconstitution exercise by President Jonathan may be responsible for the present split in the newly registered Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM). The recent registration of the former association by the INEC has been met with resistance from some prominent members, who deplored its transformation to a full fledged political party rather than a movement to act as pressure group within the ruling party as well as a bridge among politicians across all divides. A group of PDM members led by Senator Abubakar Mahdi, which also has Chief Dubiem Onyia, Shuaibu Abdulahi and leaders of the movement in the six geo-political zones of the country as members, had come up with a position denouncing the “secret” transformation of the movement by the Alhaji Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim leadership into a political party as they claimed that it was against the vision of the founding fathers. But a top PDM source revealed that members kicking against the registration of the movement were motivated by selfish consideration especially the chance to become chairmen of boards of federal parastatals. The source said that those questioning the registration of the party participated in the process but have now backtracked having been infiltrated by the PDP which has enticed them with board appointments. It added that while such persons have the right to remain in the PDP, they must also respect the right of others to belong to whatever platform they have decided to join. According to the source, “what happened is that these people participated in the proceeding but one way or the other, the PDP has gone to lure them and they are now denying it. So, it shows how dishonourable some people can be. “But we are not bothered about that. We are waxing stronger in their absence and there are more issues to tackle rather than dissipating energy on frivolities. “Don’t forget that the sharing formula is on now. PDP is giving positions to people in terms of board membership. So, some people may be doing one thing or the other to hang in there. “But we are not stopping anyone from belonging to where they want to belong. They too should respect our view to belong where we want to belong,” the source volunteered. It will be recalled that while not denouncing the registration of PDM as a political party, its leader and former Vice President Atiku Abukakar, had said that those behind the registration were free to exercise such right while he vowed that himself would remain in the PDP.
