2033 Manned mission to Mars Arguably the most long-overdue of all space missions – a manned trip to Mars – is finally undertaken by 2033.* Six decades after the Apollo landings, technology is now greatly improved, particularly with regards to computing and telecommunications. A new heavy-lift launch vehicle has been developed, together with a smaller spacecraft known as the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV). This is based on designs originally planned for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle. The MPCV is capable of carrying four astronauts on 21-day missions. For journeys to Mars, which typically take several months, it is attached to other modules with longer-term consumables and support capabilities.*
