21st September 2014 Day shift Territory Duty Superintendent (acting Supt.) Garry Smith:- The Mitchell Mile – traffic disruption notification. Between 3.00pm and 8.00pm the Inaugural Mitchell Mile foot race will be held on Mitchell St. Darwin CBD. (sorry but I’ve misplaced my 1939 Dunlop Volley Tennis shoes so I can’t make it) From now vehicular traffic will be restricted to residents, service vehicles, tourism and workers vehicles. From 3.00pm Mitchell St between Bennett and McLachlan St will be closed to all traffic. Please obey and be friendly to the traffic marshalls who will be in place to ensure everyone’s safety. I encourage you to go and watch (ten) 10 of the Territory Response Group Officers who are taking part. No big deal you say? Well seven (7) of those will be running in full tactical kit which weighs upwards of 15 kilograms whilst another three (3) will be running in EOD9 Bomb Suits. These weigh around 36 kilograms and are designed to protect the wearer from an explosion from a kilo of plastic explosives within a metre. These are approximates estimates only. You can imagine how hot they would be as well!! The world record for running a mile in a bomb suit is eight (8) minutes so I hope the lads give it a good crack. Other Emergency Services and Defence Personal will be taking part as well Good luck to the TRG fella’s and all other competitors. This broken down old mule will salute you from the sideline !! (if Teddy Bears were running in the Mitchell Mile how would they start the race? Ready Teddy GO – boom boom!)
