Todays Date : 20/09/2014 Pyinma flower declared Flower of A&N Islands Port Blair, Sept. 19 The Pyinma flower has been declared as the state flower of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the 8th Meeting of the State Board for Wildlife held under the Chairmanship of Lt. Governor, A&N Islands. Pyinma (Lagerstroemia hypoleuca) is a medium to large sized tree found in the moist deciduous forests of our Islands with lilac coloured flowers produced in bunches of pyramidal shape (inflorescences) is endemic to our islands and is very common in Andaman group of Islands. The views of the public, if any, may be sent to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (WL), Vanya Prani Bhawan, Chatham, Port Blair (03192-233549), a communication from the Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) said. Ozone day observed at Science Centre Port Blair, Sept. 19 The International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer was observed in a befitting manner by the Science Centre, Port Blair on Sept. 16. As part of the programme a ‘painting competition’ was organized for the students of various schools in and around Port Blair. The theme of this year’s celebration is –“Ozone Layer Protection: The Mission Goes On”. Accordingly, T. Rukmani of G.D.M.S, Shama Hanif of Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School & Sneha of V.K.V were adjusted as first, second & third prize winners respectively, while Keerthi Sunder of Ananda Marga Middle School & Boby Thapa of GSS, South Point were adjudged jointly for consolation prizes. Special community interaction programme by CG Campbell Bay, Sept. 19 A Special Community Interaction was carried out by the Indian Coast Guard at Govind Nagar, Campbell Bay as part of forthcoming ‘Tat Suraksha’ Exercise. The fishermen were sensitized about the importance of coastal security aspect and also explained about the fact that being a small locality they would be able to easily identify the intruder and alert the Coast Guard, Police, Fisheries Department and act as ‘eyes and ears’ of coastal security. In addition, a check of DATS (Distress Alert Transmitter System), emergency life-saving equipment, donated to fisherman under joint scheme of Indian Coast Guard and ISRO, was also carried out at Rajeev Nagar, Campbell Bay. The local people were explained about the importance of carrying the life saving equipment such as life jacket, torch etc. Transport class vehicle owners asked to fit reflectors Port Blair, Sept. 19 All owners of transport class of vehicles have been asked to mandatorily fit Reflectors i.e. conspicuity tape in all transport vehicles. Before producing the vehicle for annual inspection, such owners should ensure that their vehicles are fitted with Retro Reflective Tapes. The tapes should be two white reflex reflectors in the front, one each at right and left corners at a height not exceeding 1,500 mm above the ground. Two red reflex reflectors should be fitted in the rear, one each at the right and left corners at a height not exceeding 1,500 mm, above the ground. The area of the reflectors shall not be less than 28.5 Sq.cm. in the case of vehicle with overall length exceeding 6 metre and shall not be less than 7 Sq.cm. in case of other vehicles. Two amber coloured reflex reflector on each left-hand and right hand side of the vehicle, one set as close to the front end as possible and the other set as close to the rear end as possible. The height of the side reflectors and the ground shall not be more than 1,500 mm. The areas of each reflector shall not be less than 28.5 Sq.cm. The reflector shall be reflex type conforming to the Indian Standard IS:8339-1993 specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards, a communication from the Registering Authority, A&N Administration said. Encroachment removed Port Blair, Sept. 19 The Revenue staff of Ferrargunj Tehsil has conducted eviction drive over government lands in the area of Patwari circle no.01 on Sept. 17. Accordingly, they removed/evicted encroachers from government lands and removed one temporary hut and fencing with an area of 0.4000 hects. over Sy. No.3 situated at Kalatang village. The eviction drive is being carried out to protect government lands from encroachments. Quality of TV 24 improved Port Blair, Sept. 19 The quality of TV 24 on Andaman Cable Network is now up-to-date and one can tune into channel No. 376 on the set top box at 7:45 pm everyday to watch ‘Andaman Har Pal’, a special bulletin with latest news from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. TV 24 will also launch its channel on Jain-Hits, Smart Satellite Network by the end of September 2014. Machine for diagnosing multi drug resistant TB installed Mayabunder, Sept 19 A new machine (CB-NAAT) for diagnosing Multi Drug Resistant TB (MDR) has been installed at District TB Centre, Dr. R.P. Hospital, Mayabunder on Sept. 15. At a simple function, Joint Director (Health), Mayabunder, N&M Andaman, Dr. R. Thulasidasan, inaugurated the facility in presence of District TB Officer, Medical Officers and Health Officials. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Thulasidasan briefed the gathering about the cartridge based nucleic acid amplification testing (CB-NAAT) which is a rapid molecular beacons-based Xpert MTB/RIF assay technology. The test detects Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB) and Rifampicin (Rif) resistance conferring mutations directly from untreated sputum specimen. It is designed to extract, amplify and identify targeted rpoB nucleic acids sequence automatically with minimal specimen handling, he added. CB-NAAT is endorsed by RNTCP as a rapid molecular diagnostic tool. Illicit ganja seized; two arrested Port Blair, Sept. 19 The Pahargaon police have arrested two persons namely Gorachand Bera S/o Shri Bhupati Bera R/o Vill – Mirja Nagar, Mednapur, West Bengal now residing at Bhatubasti & Sona Roy S/o Shri Karpoti Chavan Roy R/o Garacharma and recovered over two kilograms of illicit ganja on checking at Bhatu Basti near Range office. A case has been registered at PS Pahargaon under NDPS Act. Both accused persons were arrested and the motorcycle has been seized They were produced before the Court and 4 days police custody remand was obtained to find out the actual source of ganja. Further investigation of the case is on. Coast Guard rescues five fishermen off South Sentinel Island Port Blair, Sept. 19 In yet another Search and Rescue operation, Indian Coast Guard rescues 05 fishermen stranded at the remote South Sentinel Island by airlifting them to Port Blair on 18 Sep 14 braving the inclement weather. Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), Port Blair of Coast Guard received information on Sept. 16 regarding fishing boat FB Durga with 05 crew departed Hutbay, Little Andaman for fishing on 08 Sep 14 and was overdue since Sept. 14. On receipt of information Coast Guard promptly launched Search and Rescue operation and diverted Indian Coast Guard Ship Varad on patrol for search and rescue of fishermen. The Coast Guard Dornier aircraft was also launched for sea air coordinated search on Sep 17. The boat could not be located in the probable area indicated. On reassessment, the Dornier aircraft was again launched on Sept 18 and located 5 survivors at South Sentinel Island. Immediately Coast Guard Chetak helicopter was also launched for airlifting the stranded fishermen from the South Sentinel Island. On arrival at Port Blair, they were provided medical aid. The survivors were crew of the missing fishing Boat Durga belonging to Hut Bay. While sharing their ordeal, the fisherman said that they had left Hut Bay for fishing on Sep 8. On Sep 10, the weather deteriorated and the boat capsized off South Sentinel Island. The boat crew was without life jacket and hence with great difficulty they swam to the shore with the help of ice box which is used for storing the fish catch. On the island, they survived with limited food items available with them till rescued by the Coast Guard. Coast Guard Units undertook the SAR mission and saved the precious lives despite prevailing rough weather conditions over the island. The Indian Coast Guard so far during the current year has saved 25 lives at sea in Andaman Islands in keeping with its moto Vayama Rakshamah, a communication received here said. Padauk timber seized Port Blair, Sept 19 Padauk timber worth Rs.2 lakhs has been recovered from the possession of P.V. Mohd. Jaffer of Malapuram village on Sept. 17. Acting upon an information that a person has illegally stocked huge quantity of padauk wood and is using the same to make furniture at an unauthorized factory at Malapuram, the Police team of Central Crime Station and Special Branch (CID) conducted a raid and seized padauk timber worth Rs. 2 lakhs. All the seized items has been handed over to forest officials. Hindi Day celebration by various organizations Rangat, Sept. 19 Hind Day was celebrated by the Police Department here with a function in the conference hall of Police Line on Sept. 15. International Ozone Layer Day observed in Isles Port Blair, Sept. 19 The International Ozone Layer Day was observed at Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Sabari Junction on 16th September, 2014 in a befitting manner to sensitize the students about the significance of “Ozone Layer”. Various competitions like “Poster making, Article writing and Elocution” competition on the topic “Ozone Layer Depletion and Remedies” were conducted among the students. The Day was observed to make the people aware about the importance and the need to protect ozone layer for Earth’s survival. A special programme was conducted on the day. Meanwhile, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was celebrated on Sept. 16 by ANCOL Eco Club of Andaman College, Haddo. Defence Services Staff College Course on visit Port Blair, Sept. 19 The Defence Services Staff College Course (DSSC-70) accompanied by Lt Gen SK Gadeock, AVSM, Comdt, and Directing Staff is on visit to Andaman & Nicobar Islands from Sept. 14. Defence Services Staff College located at Wellington in Tamil Nadu, is one of the few institutions of its type in the world where training is imparted to aspiring Staff Officers of all the three Services- the Army, Navy and Air Force, as also selected officers of the paramilitary and civil services, and officers from friendly foreign countries. On visits to the military components at Port Blair, the course was briefed on various unique facets of these Islands, such that future military leadership remains sensitive to security, development, ecology and environment imperatives.
