22 March, The International Gurjar Day Dear friends Gurjara is an international community in the sense that they have been living in many countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and some Central Asian countries from time immemorial. Their history goes back to the times of imperial kushanas/ kasanas i.e. first three centuries A D. Alexander Cunningham, the first Director General of Archaeological Survey of India identified Kushanas with modern Gujars. He conceded modern Kasana clan of Gujars as remaining of Kushanas. Kushan emperor Kanishka held parts of Central Asia to borders of China, the whole Afghanistan, Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northern India. Peshawar in Pakistan and Mathura in India were his main Capitals. International trade route of contemporary times, the silk route was under the control of Kushanas. The ancestors of Gujars, the Kushana confederation under Kanishka nurtured a cosmopolitan culture through out their vast empire. According to the majority of historian Kushana/Kasana emperor kanishka started the Saka era in 78 A D. at the time of his accession. The Saka era starts on 22 March every year. Thus 22 March is the date of accession of kanishka to the throne of Kushana Empire. AS Kanishka, the ancestor of modern Gujars held an international empire with a cosmopolitan culture and still has international appeal, his accession day, 22 March seems suitable to celeberate as “International Gujar Day”.
