22 years ago today we were all about to go through the storm of our lives. On the eve of the storm we all were probably doing our final preparations to our homes or trying to find some final supplies at the nearest store while trying to find a gas station that didnt have a mile long wait. I remember as the storm got closer people brushed it like a fart in the wind. Lets face it many people in Dade County werent prepared because much of the time storms would curve away at the last minute. Hurricane Andrew was supposed to hit Broward remember!?!? And yes it did curve..... Curved southbound straight for South Dade County..... I am thankful that we took the storm seriously but even at that we werent prepared for our house to be wiped out..... We werent prepared for many things after the storm.... No power for at least 6 weeks.... The hot summer days that followed up after the storm. The unrecognizable streets of South Dade (falls mall area). Its was a war zone feeling everywhere we went. But as I sit here and reflect on the storm..... Im kinda glad it hit us..... Let me explain why.... The storm opened us up to the fact that we shouldnt mess with mother nature.... Even though to this day I compare every hurricane to Andrew and nothing has come close. The storm changed Miami forever and it changed the people who lived through it. Made us all stronger and it brought out the good in people even if it was for a couple of months. Neighbors helping Neighbors was seen across South Dade. We can all say we Andrew Survivors are unique and are able to pass down this story of a storm that we will probably never see again in our lifetime. I was only 12 when it hit but as of today Ive told many of my experience and will continue to do so especially my kids when they get older to understand. This Facebook page proves to everyone that no matter where we come from how rich or poor we all are.... 22 years ago tomorrow we all were in the same place living the same life. I still live in South Florida and wont ever leave..... This is home!!!
