22 years ago, when my two eldest daughters were 4 months and 2 years old, I switched Pediatricians because I didnt resonate with the group of doctors I was with. Their response to everything was to give an antibiotic and they did not take well to me challenging them. This new doctor (MD), a father of 4 himself, spoke to me not only about the dangers of vaccines, but also advised I keep my children away from wheat and dairy if I wanted them to be healthy. The dairy was not a problem because I exclusively breastfed them (and their two younger sisters) and never had to supplement, although I eventually gave them almond milk in place of cows milk, but the wheat (he didnt say gluten) was another story altogether. This doctor was so different from the others and actually took the time to sit and talk with me, discuss ideas with me, that I sensed he was not only correct, but ahead of his time. I cleaned out my kitchen cabinets of all wheat products and began to buy gluten free pasta, bread and even pizza crust and to read everything I could about childrens health. I shared this information with a dear friend whos son was having chronic ear infections (many rounds of antibiotics) and stomach issues (she wasnt able to breastfeed)- he eventually got tubes put in his ears, not only once, but twice and ended up with an appendectomy before his teens. A nurse friend of hers and acquaintance of mine, said my children were going to be malnourished as were hers, if she followed my lead (which she did not). Weve come a long way!
