23-06-14 Gospel of the Day Matthew, 7 1. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; 2. because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get, and the standard you use will be the standard used for you. 3. Why do you observe the splinter in your brothers eye and never notice the great log in your own? 4. And how dare you say to your brother, Let me take that splinter out of your eye, when, look, there is a great log in your own? 5. Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brothers eye. 2 Kings, 17 5. The king of Assyria invaded the whole country and, coming to Samaria, laid siege to it for three years. 6. In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah on the Habor, a river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. 7. This happened because the Israelites had sinned against Yahweh their God who had brought them out of Egypt, out of the grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshipped other gods, 8. they followed the practices of the nations which Yahweh had dispossessed for them. 13. And yet through all the prophets and the seers, Yahweh had given Israel and Judah this warning, Turn from your wicked ways and keep my commandments and my laws in accordance with the entire Law which I laid down for your fathers and delivered to them through my servants the prophets. 14. But they would not listen, they were as stubborn as their ancestors, who had no faith in Yahweh their God. 15. They despised his laws and the covenant which he had made with their ancestors and the warnings which he had given them. Pursuing futility, they themselves became futile through copying the nations round them, although Yahweh had ordered them not to act as they did. 16. They rejected all the commandments of Yahweh their God and cast themselves metal idols, two calves; they made themselves sacred poles, they worshipped the whole array of heaven, and they served Baal. 17. They caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire of sacrifice, also they practised divination and sorcery, they sold themselves to doing what displeases Yahweh, provoking his anger. 18. Because of which, Yahweh became enraged with Israel and thrust them away from him. The tribe of Judah was the only one left. Psalms, 60 1. [For the choirmaster To the tune The decree is a lily In a quiet voice Of David To be learnt When he was at war with Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Zobah, and Joab marched back to destroy twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt] God, you have rejected us, broken us, you were angry, come back to us! 2. You made the earth tremble, split it open; now mend the rifts, it is tottering still. 3. You have forced your people to drink a bitter draught, forced us to drink a wine that made us reel. 4. You gave a signal to those who fear you to let them escape out of range of the bow.Pause 5. To rescue those you love, save with your right hand and answer us. 6. God has spoken from his sanctuary, In triumph I will divide up Shechem, and share out the Valley of Succoth. 7. Mine is Gilead, mine Manasseh, Ephraim the helmet on my head, Judah my commanders baton, 8. Moab a bowl for me to wash in, on Edom I plant my sandal. Now try shouting Victory! over me, Philistia! 9. Who will lead me against a fortified city, who will guide me into Edom, 10. if not you, the God who has rejected us? God, you no longer march with our armies. 11. Bring us help in our time of crisis, any human help is worthless. 12. With God we shall do deeds of valour, he will trample down our enemies. Commentary on the Gospel Judging others means also condemn them. There are two in todays Gospel exhortations: the first of not judging others (vv. 1-2) and the second against hypocrisy (vv. 3-5). The judgment against others is a way to label the person and petrify her an irreversible image, ie, without giving him any opportunity to defend or change. Judging others means also condemn them. In Johns gospel, in Jesus conversation with Nicodemus, we find the opposition between judge and save, God sent not his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him (Jn 3:17) . Eschatology (v. 2) should illuminate the present life of the disciple and guide their behavior. The second exhortation concerns the hypocrisy that is characterized in these terms: one sees a small defect in the lives of his brother and this glitch happens to be your biggest occupation. However, because of the blindness itself the person does not recognize the seriousness of their situation, or make any effort to eliminate it. In the controversy with the Pharisees, Jesus makes this strong statement: If you were blind, ye should have no sin; but ye say, we see! Your sin remains (John 9.41). In popular saying say: Blindness is one that most do not want to see. prayer Spirit that leads to respect similar, educates me to show mercy to my neighbor, so I should not be led to judge him negatively.
