239 years ago today in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, PA, two battalions of Continental Marines were formed to help our country win its independence. The men who made up those two battalions had to meet two requirements. They had to be unrelentingly patriotic, and they had to own their own rifle. From their first amphibious assault in March of 1776, to the Barbary Wars, the battle of Bladensburg in 1814 (our Thermopylae), the battle of Chapultapec during the Mexican War, Belleau Wood in World War I, the entire Pacific Theater of World War II, Inchon and Chosin Reservoir of the Korean War, Khe Sahn, Hue City and Operation Dewey Canyon of the Vietnam War, Grenada, Desert Storm, and the recent wars in the Middle East, Marines have fought to defend our country and those who live in it; friends, family and strangers alike. Happy 239th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps. Thank you to my brothers and sisters in arms who have served and still serve, and to the friends, family, and legions of anonymous people who support us! God bless and Semper Fidelis!
