24 April 1981: William James Stockman, Protestant civilian was found fatally wounded 5 days earlier by a man walking his dog. Three men from the Shankill and Woodvale district were jailed for 6 years in connection with the killing. The men pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm resulting in murder and kidnapping charges being dropped against them. It was said to the court that 2 young girls said they were indecently assaulted and pointed Mr Stockman out as the assailant as he was in the Downing Street Ulster Loyalist Club. The court was told by Crown council that Mr Stockman was subjected to systematic assault with considerable savagery over a period of time. After he had been beaten, his assailants cleaned him up, dragged or carried him outside and left him at the nearby junction of Downing and Ariel Streets. The judge said the he was satisfied that the men actually believed Mr Stockman was the 1 who assaulted the girls. The judge said: we cannot excuse the fact that you took the law into your own hands. LEST WE FORGET!
