25 Pro-Amaechi Lawmakers Formally Declare For APC Anayo Onukwugha — July 17, 2014 Twenty-Five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, yesterday formally declared for the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is as the kidnapped member of the House, Hon. Golden Ngozi Chioma, regained his freedom after about one week in captivity. Speaking during a session, House Leader, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, said they had ceased to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), adding that further correspondence to them should bear the APC. Lloyd said: “The 25 pro-Amaechi lawmakers have asked me to declare our formal defection to All Progressives Congress (APC). Henceforth, 25 of us should be referred to as All Progressives Congress members. We are telling the world today that we are all members of APC.” Responding to the defection, the Speaker, Hon. Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, requested his colleagues to document their decision. Meanwhile, one of the pro-Amaechi lawmakers, Golden Chioma, who was kidnapped by gunmen, has been freed by his captors. Chioma’s release yesterday morning came less than 24 hours, after the seventh Legislative Assembly, in a motion of urgent attention, appealed to the suspected kidnappers to free him unhurt. The lawmaker, who represents Etche Constituency II and Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, was abducted by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt. It was reported that the captors did not establish contact with the victim’s family. It could not be ascertained if ransom was paid before he regained freedom. Chief of Staff to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Hon. Tony Okocha, has declared that the alleged moves by some forces operating from Abuja to use six members of the Rives State House of Assembly to impeach the governor will not succeed. This is as the APC in Rivers State has described as ‘shocking and retrogressive’ the impeachment of the governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako , by members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly doing the bid of ‘undemocratic elements’ operating from Abuja . Okocha, who made the comment yesterday when two groups, the APC Youths League and Igbo Professionals in Rivers State, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, said the type of Nyako’s impeachment will never happen in Rivers State, as majority of members of the State House of Assembly are loyal to the APC and Amaechi. Okocha also said members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will never give in to such rascality as exhibited by their Adamawa counterparts. He said; “I wish to assure all APC faithful and the entire good people of Rivers State that they should continue with their normal business activities as no effort by some unscrupulous undemocratic elements will succeed in thwarting or tampering with the mandate they freely gave to Governor Amaechi as I am very convinced that we are capable and ready to defend the mandate no matter the odds.” Meanwhile, chairman of APC, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, alleged that the impeachment of Nyako was spearheaded by those he described as ‘undemocratic elements’ operating from Abuja.
