25 years ago this week in Boonville, 25 years ago this week a representative from Donald Trump (a famous New York entrepreneur) visited Boonville with the purpose of inspecting and making inquiries regarding the overall condition of the Commercial Hotel, or Ballantine House as it is also known. Trump became aware of the building through an ad placed by Jay Turley (the owner of the structure) in a national historic preservation magazine published in Washington, D.C. Turley said he was told by the Trump agent that his boss considered the building one of the most important buildings in the Midwest and that it should be restored. Maryellen McVicker, president of the Friends of Historic Boonville, identified the Commercial Hotel as the second most significant historic structure in Boonville, after Thespian Hall. McVicker said the structure is one of the few remaining in the area which date from the time of the start of the Santa Fe Trail in the early 1820s.
