25 years ago today, this hour, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Bay area. My immediate family was there, I was out to sea, deployment commenced just two days earlier on the USS Enterprise, which was just leaving its homeport (of San Francisco), changing homeports to Virginia. I was listening to the world series (AFRTS) and heard what everyone else heard. Since our families were for the most part still in the Bay area, there was much concern obviously among the crewmembers. It was the first and only time that I ever saw a carrier halt flight operations, for any reason, ever...And remained so for the rest of the evening.
