259 MILLION KWACHA FOR THREE PERSONS AND THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN BAIL! Three suspects arrested last week for being found in possession of unexplained sums of money are now answering a common charge of stealing a total sum of K259 million. These details are contained in formal charges brought before the Lilongwe Magistrates Court. Martha Banda was arrested on Wednesday for being found in possession of K7.8 million, while Tiyembekeze Lisimba was arrested on Thursday for being found in possession of K200,000. Elita Kachali Moyo was also arrested in connection to the same issue. All the three suspects work at the Accountant General’s office. Under the count of theft by public servant, which all the three are answering, Lisimba is answering the charge of stealing K110, 584, 699.02, Banda is answering the charge of stealing K96,439,612.00 while Moyo is answering the charge of stealing K52,890,00. Banda and Lisimba are also answering a charge of money laundering for being found in possession of K7.8 million and K200,000 respectively. Banda is also answering a third count of being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen. Meanwhile the Lilongwe magistrate court on Friday granted the three accused persons bail. Making the bail ruling Chief Resident Magistrate Ruth Chinangwa said although the state argued that the three may interfere with evidence, it was not reason enough to deny them bail. “The state argued that if on bail the three would interfere with evidence. However, the court believes seriousness of the case cannot be a reason for not granting them bail. Therefore the court is granting bail to the three, each with a cash-bond of K150,000 and two sureties each to pay a cash-bond of K100,000 each,” Chinangwa said. After cross-examining two sureties of each of the accused, the three were freed on bail. Hearing of the case starts on November 4.
