26 July 1975: Robert J. McPherson, 25-year-old Protestant, married and an RUC police officer was from Leck outside Coleraine. Const. McPherson was shot by INLA gunmen in an ambush before noon in Dungiven. He was shot once while another policeman was shot 7 times but recovered. There were scores of Saturday afternoon shoppers on Main Street when the attack occurred. Const. McPherson went to investigate a report of a suspect car. The report was a hoax and was to lure the police into an ambush. They just got out of the car when they were shot. As Const. McPherson lay fatally wounded, the gunman stole his gun. A man from Belfast received a 20-year sentence when he admitted attempted murder and manslaughter. LEST WE FORGET! dh
