26th Annual Praise the Lard Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off September 19th-21st Hosted by 17th Street Barbecue (Muphysboro, IL – July 2013) – Mike Mills and daughter Amy Mills of 17th Street Barbecue are pleased to announce the 26th Annual Praise the Lard Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off. Taking place September 19th – 21st, this old-fashioned tent revival praising the almighty pig is one of the most anticipated competitions on the barbecue circuit. An anticipated 80 teams will travel from at least 14 states and around the globe to participate in one of the barbecue world’s most respected contests. Top contestants from Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, New York and even Germany are among those who will be represented. This dual-sanctioned event is equipped with both Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) and Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) certified judges reviewing entries for chicken, fish, wings, shoulder, ribs, brisket and of course, whole hog. Occupying four city blocks in downtown Murphysboro, in the southwest corner of Southern Illinois, the three-day competition features a variety of entertainment and fierce competition with $25,000 in prize money and Grand Champion bragging rights. The Grand Champion wins automatic entry to the World Food Championships, held in Las Vegas in November, and is entered into the coveted Jack Daniel’s World Invitational Barbecue Cooking Contest draw. The weekend begins Thursday evening with the fish and wings contest, a fish fry open to the public, and live music as the exhibiters come from near and far to settle into their stations. Friday marks the start of the two-day Grand Champion Blowout and kicks off with the Murphysboro High School’s Crimson Express Marching Band parading through the center of competition grounds while the competitors fire-up their pits for the next day’s judging. Friday evening’s festivities include the Grand Champion Buffet, for sponsors and the public, and more live music. Saturday’s judging officially begins with a blessing from Reverend Randy Twyford over a shot of Gentleman Jack before each team gets the opportunity to show off their best barbecue to the judges and a chance to win one of barbecue world’s most intense competitions. Praise the Lard has become a cornerstone pilgrimage on the barbecue circuit – an old-fashioned tent revival celebrating the almighty pig.
