27 January 2013 Holocaust Memorial Day Commenting on Holocaust Memorial Day, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day the NUT commemorates the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. It is crucial to recognise the enormous harm that hatred and intolerance can do to communities and societies. “The NUT in partnership with the Holocaust Educational Trust has developed teaching resources which explore the treatment of different groups of people by the Nazi regime. These teaching materials, Who was persecuted, how and why, are aimed at secondary school pupils.* Learning about all aspects of the Holocaust is central to developing an understanding of the prejudices which continue to burden societies across the globe. By learning from the lessons of the past, we can create a future where the fear and loathing of ‘the other’ is replaced by peace and social justice. “We welcome the Government’s decision to continue funding for the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project, which gives two students from every school in the country the chance to take part in educational visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau. “The NUT would like to thank the Holocaust Educational Trust for its work in challenging anti-Semitism, racism and prejudice in our society today. We cannot afford to be complacent. We must continue to commemorate and mark the loss of life in the Holocaust if we hope to overcome prejudice in all its forms today and highlight its tragic costs.”
