28 Oct 2014 - The frontal system of a stalled 986 mb low is moving through the BC south coast this morning. Steady rain will give way to showers as the cold front moves inland about mid-morning. Gale Force winds in eastern Juan de Fuca, Haro and Georgia Strait will begin to abate, falling below warning levels, late this morning. Rain and high winds will last into the afternoon around northern Vancouver Island as the low centre and associated trough moves north and then begins to weaken. In the wake of the frontal system resultant weather will vary. A southerly flow will set up around southern Vancouver Island as a weak ridge of high pressure begins to push in. It is possible Greater Victoria could actually see some clearing today with cloud and showers dominating most of the rest of the south coast. Wednesday will bring a pause in the precipitation (or at least the intensity) and clearing through at least a part of the day in most areas. The southernmost areas will likely have the greatest period of clearing with daytime temperatures bouncing above seasonal normals. And then it starts all over again. A strengthening 988 mb low moving out of the Aleutians is dragging a long cold front through the sub-tropics picking up moisture (see 24 hr prog graphic) and will approach the area on Thursday with strong winds and rain, likely late in the day and overnight into Friday. Expect showery conditions on Friday. Further into the weekend another system will move through the Gulf of Alaska and move into the area Saturday night through to Sunday bringing another bout of organized precipitation. ** Note: Winds on northwest Vancouver Island reached sustained Hurricane Force yesterday evening for about an hour. - West coast Vancouver Island winds SE Gale Force to 40 knots (74 kmh) veering SW around midday, abating this evening.
