29 Aug 2013 Recent Mountain Lion/Bobcat Sightings Recently, officials with the Des Moines Police Department’s Animal Care & Control Unit, along with the Animal Rescue League, Des Moines Police Chief Humane Officer, Polk County Animal Control, Altoona Police Department and the State Department of Natural Resources have received numerous calls of a possible mountain lion sighting. The majority of these calls were concerned with the extreme east city limits of Des Moines bordering the extreme west city limits of Altoona. Last night, during the early sunset hours, a private resident snapped a photo of an animal, in the area of these sightings and provided this photo, utilized herein with permission, of a Bobcat. The photo has been examined by all of the agencies and officials listed above, and this particular photo has been confirmed as that of a mature bobcat, weighing approximately 20 pounds. Willie Suchy of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources also confirmed the photo is that of a Bobcat and NOT a Mountain Lion. Mr. Suchy relates Bobcats do not pose much of any threats to humans. This is the time of year they disperse from their young, possibly looking for rabbits. Mr. Suchy does not believe any probability exists where pet owners with small animals are at any greater threat from this Bobcat and stated they are more likely to be struck by automobiles rather than attacked by a Bobcat.
