#29 L.L. Cool J - I Need A Beat Lots of great stuff manifested with this release. Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons pretty much started Def Jam records out of an NYU dorm room with this song. The Beastie Boys became a household name as a result of them putting LL on, and this all happened for him at the ripe old age of 16. 16!!! Thats pretty unbelievable. But he was never portrayed as a kid or young throughout his career when you think about it? First of all, LLs voice was off the chain dope and didnt come across as young at all... also probably didnt hurt that he was pretty DIESEL even at that young age. When I think of LL Cool J, the first thing that pops into my head: terry cloth KANGOLS. Damn... he used to rock those tough as hell! I remember when LL hit the scene a LOT of things changed! Cats were definitely stepping their game up because his style was so hard and intricate. Without question he was one of the most lyrical cats doing it at that time, and frankly Def Jam was carving a significant niche in the culture. Their single covers (maroon and black) always looked so official and tough. The logo was super fresh too... so New York. This record was a real eye-opener for the public at large and would be the start to one of the most successful independent record labels in the history of music. https://youtube/watch?v=BVkaN--0ld0
