2nd Annual Tom Bly Memorial Race caps off 2013 racing season at Madison Speedway By: Carly Tofte Madison, MN (August 31st) – Madison Speedway wound down the 2013 season on Saturday night by hosting the 2nd Annual Tom Bly Memorial race on Race for The Cure night. Special thanks to The Shop Inc., Lac qui Parle Hope Network, Dawson Coop Credit Union, Q92’s Ole Minnie Pearl, and Bruce’s 66 of Marietta for sponsoring the great night. The 2013 Madison Speedway Champions were crowned: Wissota Street Stock Champion Mike Jans, Wissota Midwest Modified champion Jason Vejtruba, Wissota Super Stock Champion Gary Husmann, Wissota Modified Champion Andy Gordon, and Madison Pure Stock Champion Ryan Nelson. The Wissota Street Stocks had quite a race with Darrin Landmark holding on to capture the win by mere inches over Mike Jans at the finish line. Cory Giessinger ran out front early with Landmark on his tail, while Jans worked his way through the field. Landmark soon found a lane to sneak around Giessinger for the top spot, just as Jans charged low and moved into second. For the remaining ten laps, Landmark and Jans ran hard door-to-door for the lead. The two swapped lanes many times, but Landmark managed to use the momentum off the topside of turn four to take the checkers just ahead of Jans. Jordan Tollakson finished solid in third after starting near the tail of the field. Giessinger grabbed fourth and Maria Konold rounded out the top five. Troy Berends took home the Wissota Midwest Modified win after spending half the race slicing and dicing through cars to move his way to the front. Tony Konold and John Schuelke ran solid as the leaders, while third on back was a cluster of cars fighting for position. Berends managed to use the lowside to squeeze by competitors and safely move into a position to chase down the top two. It didn’t take long for Berends to move by Schuelke and under Konold for the top spot, and then a yellow fell as Blake Swenson’s machine went up in flames on the backstretch. On the restart, Berends maintained the lead while DJ Tesch charged around the lowside to move into third. Tesch worked to reel in Konold for second, but a late race yellow made for a green-white-checkered finish. Berends prevailed with the win and Tesch used the restart to steal second from Konold by a car length. Konold took third, while Shawn Fernkes and Tim Waba completed the top five. Aberdeen’s, Nick Schipke, scored the Wissota Super Stock feature after running the topside to gather momentum and rocket past the leaders. As Schipke flew around the highside of Bob Holtquist, Gary Husmann nudged his way underneath Holtquist in a battle for the spot. Holtquist momentarily got sandwiched as Schipke moved into the lead and Husmann slid into second. A yellow with six laps remaining gave Husmann and Holtquist another shot at Schipke, but he would not be denied. Schipke took home the hardware, tailed by Husmann, Holtquist, Justin Hedtke, and Cole Searing in the top five. In the Wissota Modifieds, Ross Dixon scored his first win at Madison Speedway in 2013. After starting front row, Dixon took off on the topside while Brian Haben tried to chase him down on the lowside. Haben reeled Dixon in a few times, but momentum helped Dixon to hold the lead and pull away. Dixon scored his first-ever Wissota Modified feature win, while Haben, Andy Gordon, Scott Tofte, and Jayson Good followed him to the checkers to round out the top five. A good battle between Kody Jacobson, Abby Hacker, and Henry Hacker took place for the lead in the Madison Pure Stock feature. The three raced side-by-side for several laps until Jacobson grabbed the top spot at the midway point of the race. Jacobson scored the win, trailed by Abby Hacker, Henry Hacker, Taylor Willms, and Ryan Nelson in the top five.
