2nd December - where did that year go...? As is traditional around these parts I post up my top-10 songs of the year for whatever its worth. I normally start the countdown somewhere in the middle of the second week of the month, but as a break from the norm, Im starting it today mainly because: (i) its a top 15 not a top 10; and (ii) our school breaks for holiday on Friday 20th - so a lot to get in by then. 2013 - a year dominated by high-end, flag-ship releases by huge, established artists - Sabbath, Elton, Bowie, NIN, Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Sigur Ros, Alice in Chains, Quo, Queens of the Stone Age, Earth Wind and Fire, Rod Stewart, Pet Shop Boys, Primal Scream etc etc. But this appears a lot more exciting than it actually was. In the opinion of this author, the best releases came from the newbies and outfits who slipped under the radar owing to pitiful promotional budgets afforded by their label financiers. Eyes down for a full house... #15 Chvrches - You Caught the Light Got to love a fat slice of Scottish synthpop. This is the closing track from the trios wonderful debut album, The Bones of What You Believe (well within the top 10 albums of the year). Also check out The Mother We Share, Strong Hand and We Sink as fine nuggets of contemporary pop which tips the hat to Depeche, Tubeway Army and the late 70s early 80s UK new wave.
